Initially created with the intent of only lasting one week, Black History Month began in 1926 as âNegro History Week.â
The celebratory week was created by Carter G. Woodson, a well-known African American historian, educator, publisher and scholar. The reason for this celebration is to honor all of the African Americans who contributed to the history of the United States. In 1976, the week became a month-long celebration to coincide with the birthdays of Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln.
âOur purpose, our mission is to make sure that there is clarity and awareness around where we are regarding the African American experience,â said Majorie Fuller, the director of WVUâs Center for Black Culture and Research. âAnd promoting and understanding that the African American experience is the American experience and it affects all of us.â

Was former President Ronald Reagan a RINO? He worked with Democrats, fought the Cold War, and achieved immigration reform.MIKE SARGENT /AFP /Getty Images
The term “RINO”, an abbreviation for “Republican in Name Only,” has been used for yearswithin the Republican Party. It is meant to be derogatory. I have never seen a definition or had it explained to me. So, I started thinking of what it might mean. In doing so I fell back to looking at Republican presidents who traditionally were considered the titular head of the party. Their biographies are the bedrock of the Republican Party.

We know that month-long celebrations can fizzle and wane as the month goes by. So, we want to take the opportunity to add a fresh voice to celebrating the individuals who make a difference in the lives of Black Americans with disabilities.
Many people in the history of Black Americans have also been people with disabilities. Just a few to note:
Harriet Tubman (1820-1913), a remarkable conductor (those who helped others gain their freedom from slavery), had epilepsy resulting from a head injury as a young slave.
Fannie Lou Hamer (1917-1977) was arrested in June 1963, after successfully registering to vote. At the jailhouse, she was brutally beaten, leaving lifelong injuries from a blood clot in her eye, as well as kidney and leg damage.
